Home » Our Story
Our founders, Dominic and James, along with Dominic’s wife, Julie, and their children, Dom, Maile and Ryan, set out with the goal of sharing their love for quality wine with their community.
The Burtech Family is no stranger to ambitious entrepreneurial undertakings. In 1992, Dominic and Julie founded Burtech Pipeline, a general engineering contractor that has gone on to serve clients such as the Cities of Encinitas, San Diego and Napa; both Dom and Maile have now joined the family business. Julie and Maile are passionate equestrians, so in 2012, the family purchased Caballos Del Mar, an 11-acre horse farm. The farm, which they developed from a small, single barn operation, is now a competitive Hunter/Jumper and Dressage facility and also serves as the site of Burtech Family Vineyard.

Dominic, the driving force behind our vineyard, first found the inspiration for winemaking on trips to the Napa Valley with family and friends. Blown away by the beauty of the vineyards, he wanted to create the same magical atmosphere in the hometown where he had grown up surfing, and where he and Julie raised their family.
Never ones to back down from a challenge, the Burtech family recognized that coastal vineyards come with risks, but moved forward with thorough research and a patient study of viniculture. At Caballos Del Mar, in late Summer 2019, Burtech Family Vineyard was officially planted with two thousand vines from Duarte Nursery, including Clone 17 Chardonnay Uber Vines, Clone 47 Cabernet Sauvignon Magnum Vines, and Clone 07 Syrah Magnum Vines.
